The African Diaspora in the Americas Project News Page

The African Diaspora in the Americas News page will announce new title acquisitions and screenings in the United States of the African Diaspora in the Americas collection and relevant news on the African Diaspora in the Americas Project.

February 2005
LAVA launches the African Diaspora in the Americas Project with the African Diaspora in the Americas Website, Study Guide and University Tour.

The African Diaspora in the Americas website has been created to expand on the discussion of African culture and legacy in Latin America. In this website the African Diaspora in the Americas study guide will be available for consultation and download by any visitor. Additionally, a bibliography of existing publications by prominent academics in the field and a list of related links will be included, thus making the website a hub for media arts on the African Diaspora. Visit our website at www.latinamericanvideo.org/africandiaspora.

The African Diaspora in the Americas study guide provides a road map for using the groundbreaking documentaries featured in LAVA’s African Diaspora in the Americas collection. With a concise introduction to the history of the African Diasporas of Latin America and an extensive syllabus-building bibliography of scholarly and popular literature as well as web resources, the study guide is an invaluable teaching tool.

The African Diaspora in the Americas university tour will feature Afroargentines, a documentary about the history of black people in Argentina and their contributions to Argentine culture and society, which will be followed by a question and answer session with Afroargentine historian, Miriam Gomes. Professor Gomes is one of the leading experts on Afroargentines who has published numerous works on the Cape Verdean community in Argentina and was a panelist in the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance in Durban, South Africa.
